The Last Cattle Call
by
Ivar Kalleberg

The old boys were singing About Cattle Call
Cool Water and Home on the range
The Red River Valley And Hillbilly Heaven
But our songs of today show a change
We’ll sing ‘bout depression Our strife for survival
How the bank took my farm and my home
I lost all my cattle I moved from the county
Since then I’ve been forced to roam

The fields I have cared for Are now barren land
The spring floods and droughts came each year
The crops brought big losses The meat price was falling
My mortgage became way too dear

My farm tools are rusting
The houses decaying
Ex-farmers are moving to town
We yearn for the farm life we miss good old neighbors
Our standard of living went down

My Grandpa fought Hitler Dad was in Korea
I nearly was killed in Vietnam
I’ve fought ‘gainst the commies my buddies were knocked off
With proudness I served Uncle Sam
But back in my own land I can’t make any living
‘cause no one will give me no job
I feel like an outcast I’m living on handouts
The bad times have made me a slob
