Sea and Space

Out of the Heavens
by Bernard Howe

It was 17 years ago
almost to the day.
The Challenger exploded
much to everyone's dismay.

Today upon re-entry
the Columbia came apart.
And once again everyone
feels sorrow in their heart.

How can this happen
is what everyone will ask.
Did someone forget his duty
or overlook a simple task?

Or was it just a fluke
an accident of fate?
We may never know
for there is much debate.

Today we lost 7 people
who caught the public's eye.
Now we shed some tears
and tell them all good-bye.

For we shall never forget them
and we'll keep their spirit alive.
Along with others who have gone
we'll make sure their spirit's survive.

Now they're with their maker
in the heavens up above.
We think of them as hero's
and we think of them with love.
