Aztec Ruins, 900th Year
by Carol Dee Meeks

The Native tribes came via waters call
and built a home to keep them safe from fights.
Nine hundred years ago this frame stood tall,
four hundred rooms plus Kiva meeting sites.

From Colorado to
New Mexico they came,
the Anasazi’s clan
Animas River way.

The narrow fertile valley lured this band
with skills to farm in hunter’s home anew.
Their sculptured stones now house a later clan.
The Native tribes came via waters call.

The Native tribes came via waters swelled.
They built a city high, then moved away.
An Aztec group at Chaco Canyon dwelled.
Now Pueblo clan remains at site today.

Their E-shaped plant of art
and ceremonial
below ground-chamber room,
left behind, forsaken.

Their basic form endured as years passed by.
The structure stands by Aztec monument
of National remembrance clans and tribes.
The Native tribes came via waters swelled.
