Mourning / Grief

When I Was A Soldier Of War
by Yahaya Abdul-Fatawu

I felt asleep on board as a soldier on our way for freedom.
My eyes cloud and grew dim and my mouth draw down in despair.
The distance voice of the sea waves made me feel like a helpless soldier.
The sight of freedom shocked me, stunned me,
and made my heart thud violently,
but I still kept my impressions aloof.

I said to myself;
I will never let my freedom be a fretful,
neither will I let my oppressor know what I have in mind.
My enemies were like heap of rags. My legs as a soldier were ashy and
caked with dirt which were drawn up close.

I starred at my freedom half in fear and half in wonder.
But I was daydreaming.
There days seemed endless.
There mornings and waking up were the times I could hardly wait for.

But I still stood up as a soldier of war.
I knew my freedom will be given forevermore.
Now I am a veteran, because I fought for my freedom and
the freedom and justice of my nation.
Now I'm free because friends of war sacrificed their lives
for my freedom and the freedom of our nation.

At last, my freedom its justified, I am free forever.
freedom and justice to soldiers of the past,
soldiers of today and soldiers.
