Love and Romance

Faded Ribbons
by Robert Ellsworth Harter

Satin ribbons crumpled old and pale
their luster dimmed through time
That adorned the silken auburn hair
of a girl that once was mine

And faded pictures, stained with tears
are all I have to show
For the long and empty years gone by
since my youth of long ago

Whatever has become of love
that through all of time will last
or was it just within my dreams
and memories of the past.

For in these days of shameful ways
as shocking scenes unfold
I remember back when I was young
to those valued times of old

To summer days and blissful nights
and dances in the park
And young girls there
I'd meet to share
the passions of my heart.

In bobby socks, and saddles shoes
and poodle skirts so neat
With pony tails, and painted nails
that made their image so complete.

The scent of lilacs in their hair
enraptured my young mind
Oh how I wish I could bring back
one moment from that time

As young bodies swayed,
and records played
the favorites of the day
Our awkward feet
would match the beat
on a tennis court of clay

Then with music paused
we'd grab a coke
and find a place to rest
And try to seek with hopeful heart
that one we liked the best

It seemed that all of life began
an ended with a kiss
That will live forever in our hearts
With those summer nights of bliss

With hands held tight
with all our might
we tried to hold our dreams
With spirits strong
keep back the dawn
and live forever in our teens
But all to soon those good years passed
and wars put men in harm
Gone forever were those times
of magical mystic charm

Pony tails and hula hoops
won't come my way again
But these memories old, I'll clutch and hold
of the way it was back then
