The Battle Done
by Jef Peace

A soldier in a nameless war,
a pawn on the battle field,
Being tossed by generals against the enemy's shield,
My antagonist has no face,
I'm doing as I was taught,
strike, retreat, then again,
I'm weary from the battles I've fought,
And my mind is tired as well,
too exhausted to question this war,
I only know that I must win,
My goal is that distant shore,

Towers rise and castles fall,
these like all things shall pass,
It doesn't change my purpose,
victory just beyond my grasp
A glimpse of color in an iron helm,
My enemy's eyes are just like mine,
What sorrows and joys has he beheld,
What lofty peak does he strive to climb,
And does the love of a woman impassion this vicious warriors' breast
And is he doomed as am I, to keep that love suppressed

Around me still the battle rages,
a din of clashing steel,
Cries of agony, shouts of hate, close yet far, surreal,
Suddenly, a thought pierces the fog that is blanketing my mind,
What if I just lay down my sword and refuse to fight this time,
Will I be slain and leave my enemy with the knowledge he's won,
Or will he lay down his sword like me,
And let the battle finally be done.
