Angel In White
by Shaylene Bassett

I am blind and cannot see.
Is that a reason to give up on me?
I could not hear a single thing,
Is that a reason to toss me off on this wing?
I am old but still have life in me,
Just give me a chance and you will see.
Bring me my grandchildren love they know,
when they come they do not want to go.
To a little child we are wrinkled and old,
only because their parents' words they were told.
I am here left all depressed,
left to die I guess.
Along came an angel in disguise,
took one look at me and asked why?
I told her society had given up on me,
and she smiled and said is that is not a good reason I see.
So old and crippled acting in that chair,
I know you have family somewhere.
I told her they left me here to die;
She looked at me tenderly and asked why?
I said that I do not know,
Another smile and she asked for some stories for me to bestow.
Tell me about the old days so they say,
Take my mind so far away.
I told her how we came from across the sea,
I told her how we fought for liberty.
She asked why I fight no more;
I cried a tear and said family I see no more.
I remember a time when it was me they did need,
I remember a time that I wrapped a cut that started to bleed.
I remember a time when my wife was here,
they all came and my mind was clear.
Some days all I see is war and pain,
I guess I have not been too sane.
She laughed and said so much life to waste…
Come on get up, not to fight death is a disgrace.
For someone who fought to set us free,
needs a big hug for what you did for me.
As I sat down in the chair, a few tears I cried,
My Angel in white asked me why?
Why do you have tears on your face?
Because you get, it the rest are a disgrace.
For all I needed was one little hug,
All I needed to know I was loved.
To know I am needed puts life in me,
Because of you my angel I am now free.
So you little one, you can hold your head high,
this little old man wants to live not die.
That little angel came by every day,
so when it was time he went peacefully away.
He spent his last days as happy as can be,
because that little angel set him free.
He needed to know that he was loved,
I think that angel in white was sent from above.
So when you see someone who is blind or cannot hear,
Please do not give up on them for fear.
They may end up as that little man had,
only this time the angel may not come to their bed.
How sad to die all alone,
when all you have to do is visit or pick up the phone.
Don't let that special someone just waste away...
That angel in white you become I Pray.
For everyone needs someone young and old,
for we all need to be loved I am told.
So close your eyes tonight,
and say a prayer for those who are out of your sight.
Pray they are as happy as you and me,
and pray there is hope and love and they feel free.
For that is all that little man did need,
someone to patch up his heart when it did bleed.
That little angel could be you or me,
Can you be the one to follow through,
to give the much needed love?
Are you that angel in white from above?
