Rat Race
by Ravi Rajan

I saw five billion colorful rats,
some alone, some with their mates,
some cultured and suave, some rude and uncouth,
some meek and spineless, some with lot of tooth,
some white, some black, some brown,
some grave, some like a clown,
some carefree, some cheerful, some happy,
some careful, some snobby, some snappy,
some charming, some handsome, some witty,
some ugly, some repulsive, some dirty,
some lazy, some with lots of energy and pace,
all had come to participate in the great rat race.

The race begins, some run north, some west,
some perform to their best, some take some rest,
some became the audience, some became the jury,
some backed out tired, some vented their fury,
some tried to find some shortcut or bend,
some prayed desperately for the race to end.

We are like those rats masked in a human face,
trapped forever in a never ending rat race.
