Horror and Mystery

A Farewell
by Sheila Sloan

Screams pierce the dark tonight,
Shadows dance on the edge of firelight.
There is an evil within this place,
I may never again see your face.

It was a foolish thing to begin this deed,
And be faced with their evil unending need.
There is no chance for me to escape,
I can see they are beginning to reform their shape.

Death has sharp teeth and ripping claws,
It does not come upon quiet paws.
It comes with a loud menacing snarl,
Leaving no time for me to quarrel.

God, curse the day I left your side,
On this hunt I had no reason to ride.
As I look into ferocious yellow eyes,
I know this is my last night under these skies.

You begged me to leave well enough alone,
And to your memory I must atone.
Keep well away from this part of this wood,
Do not come after me, it will do you no good.
