Discipleship At Christmas
by Von E. Weeks

As a modern people we have achieved so many things that it boggles the mind,
We understand very complex equations, but simple virtues are hard to find.

Today we find our world full of Christian’s celebrating the birth of God's Son,
Yet the very reason or essence of Christmas seems to be lost on most everyone.

At this season of shopping and merriment most of us loose site of eternal goals,
We forget to follow the simple admonishment of Christ by helping other souls.

Oh! There are many, who do more at Christmas then other times of the year,
And, there are many Christians who try to spread a little Christmas cheer.

We give superficial gifts, that do not require much effort or sacrifice on our part,
But, very few give sincere acts of service to other’s from the depths of the heart.

We buy presents for others that will not be remembered long after the Christmas fray,
Our validation is the recognition from others as they open our gifts on Christmas day.

If most any Christen was asked: “what is your greatest source for Christmas joy?”
Almost all Christians would say: “they value their family and friends, not the toys.”

We spend our life showing other what we value, not by what we say, but by what we do,
What things will your neighbors, friends, and family determine are important to you?

Many spend too much time at Christmas worrying about getting and giving “things”,
Those who follow this pattern are missing out on the true sprit that Christmas brings.

Does our Christmas behavior show God that we are true disciples of the Lord?
Or is our charity towards our brothers done in the hopes of recognition or reward?

What attributes of discipleship will you nurture during this year’s Christmas Season?
Will you let an opportunity for Christ-like actions escape your grasp for some silly reason?

We always are somehow able to make time to read a book or watch our favorite show on TV.
If we really examine our lives, we would find we spend way too much time in triviality.

We live in an age of affluence, where many have been given an abundance of wealth,
This is also a time of medical innovation where most everyone has the blessing of health.

We are indebted to our Heavenly Father and his Son for all that we have been blessed,
We’ll never be able to repay divinity for all the gifts and blessing that each of us possess.

This Christmas may we continually give true Christ like service to all our needful brothers,
As we give this service, may the only reward we seek be the joy and happiness of others.

If this Christmas we can make some Christ like changes to ourselves, I am sure we will find,
We are moving forward on the road of discipleship while helping ourselves and mankind.
