Christmas Eve In Norway
by
Ivar Kalleberg

It was Christmas Eve in Norway in a Christmas forest stood
A humble wooden cottage Sadly lacking Christmas mood
In this poor accommodation under drifts of Christmas snow
Christmas kerosene is lacking Lamps begin to lose their glow
Shivering mother frail and toothless sucks some crumbs of moldy cake
While old father cold and hungry Dreams of old times Christmas steak
Through the cracked and frosty windows Christmas stars shine clear and bright
On the old folk Christmas tears which are plentiful to night
There is a lack of Christmas spirits round the old man and his spouse
For the empty Christmas pantry could not even feed a mouse

Starving Christmas birds have vanished yet fowl swearing can be heard
Over last year's ancient wheat sheaf which has fooled a bull finch bird
Suddenly the peace is broken by the sound of jingling bells
One can hear a sleigh horse trotting until Christmas silence tells
That a journey now has ended for a guest from far away
And he's singing in high spirits A bright Christmas roundelay
Through the door intoxicated by too many Christmas beers
Sways a wolf fur wearing person while through misty specks he peers
It's the old folk's only offspring and the county's blackest sheep
Whom they all believed was stranded on cruel Fate's huge garbage heap

He who never wrote a letter not in four and twenty years
Now he whispers:" Mother! Father! " Shedding lots of Christmas tears
Foul cigar smoke clogs his bronchi And the Yule lump in his throat
While he opens up his suitcase Shipped from USA by boat
Christmas gifts are in abundance from their son in Stetson hat
Mom and dad had sets of false teeth and rice pudding dressed with fat
Christmas candles from Chicago Brighten up with Christmas light
As they sing a Christmas carol ' Bout the Silent Holy Night
Christmas joy and Christmas spirit made this Christmas day a ball
So it ended as it should end it was Christmas after all.
