Daddy’s Girl
by Von E. Weeks

From the very first moment that I caressed my daughter’s precious little face,
Daddy’s little Girl took a big chunk of my heart and attached in its place.

Each moment of her life is like a Golden coin added to the treasure chest of my life,
She could always be counted on to bring a smile to my face despite my daily strife.

Like the thrashing of her tiny little hand on my chest as she would fuss, scream and cry,
The midnight diaper changes and bottle-feeding that would cause me to groan and sigh.

The glee of her first Christmas morning as she received her very first baby doll to love,
Her mother and I felt reassured that she was a unique and special blessing, from above.

Those special hugs and kisses bestowed with all the passion of her tiny little frame.
The radiant sparkles in her eyes warming my grumpy old heart like a red-hot flame.

Daddy, tell me a story, that scares me, and make me shake from my head to my feet,
Daddy embellishing the scary story until it causes her to cover her face with the sheet.

Slumber parties with, pajamas and giggling that lasts until the wee hours of the night,
The teenage fashions, with way too much makeup, and clothes that are too short and tight.

Loud boom boxes, Nintendo’s, and the TV’s vibrating through the halls of our house,
Bathrooms full of blow dryers, hairspray, and discarded hair that look like a mouse.

A boy at the dance reminds me of a movie star, he makes my heart skip a beet or two.
With a wink and a mischievous smile she says: “Daddy he doesn’t measure up to you”.

Sweet sixteen, she dating now, and other young men are now the axis of her feelings,
A broken heart occurs quite often, but each new romance helps in its miraculous healing.

School, sports, parties, and dates are the constant whirlpool that consumes her time.
She gives an occasional hug or kiss for her dear old Dad, making me feel quite sublime.

High school and its flurry of activates, quickly comes, and goes in the blink of an eye,
My baby girl is going away to collage; daddy chokes back the tears as he says goodbye.

Phone calls, holidays, and summer is the only time his little lady gets to see her dad,
One weekend daddy’s girl comes home, arm and arm with a handsome young lad.

Gleaming from ear-to-ear she says: “Daddy I found me a man who’s just as amazing as you”,
Daddy we want you’re blessing, because he’s asked me to marry him in a month or two.

Daddy little girl at the marriage alter, adorned in her beautiful white wedding dress,
With a last kiss, daddy’s little girl whispers: “Well Daddy I am filially leaving the nest”.

Daddy blinks hard to stop the flow of tears that he feels welling up inside.
It is in this moment that he realizes that his daddy’s girl is another’s bride.

Daddy, she whispers: “I will always be your little girl” and she starts to cry,
Daddy stands as proud as a Father can be on this occasion as he waves goodbye.

Mother, wasn’t our little girl the most beautiful bride that you’ve ever seen in your life,
She reminded me of you, when you and I first took our vows, to become man and wife.

As that night ends daddy puts a little piece of his hart on a storage shelf that night,
Time passes and Daddy’s little girl brings another little girl into this world’s light.

Daddy stands at the hospitable looking at the tiny tike through the window of glass.
Daddy now knows this gift from his daughter; give him a place for his heart at last.

Granddaddy’s little girl thrashing her tiny little hand on his chest as she fusses, screams,
Granddaddy, now understand that fatherhood is a precious part of God’s eternal scheme.
