An Illinois Lawn
by Don Lewis

When seeding a lawn you may find this true
These are some things that you should do
To have your seed grow as you’d like for it to
With this advice it may just grow for you

Summer seeding ‘s ok if rain will be soon
Early fall is much better or just before June
But if you must, then the first quarter moon
You’ll find it to be best on a mid afternoon

Seed should lay heavy on pre-fertilized ground
That has had a good rain and settled it down
Break open the crust just a bit at the crown
Bust up or rid clods and rock you have found

Once the section in seed is heavily spread
Scatter wheat straw as a thick fluffy bed
Dampen if you can so if in winds it will shed
Keeping ground shaded from the sun over head

Then with afternoon rains and cool evening air
And with the gentle touch of your tender care
It will grow so quick that in awe you will stare
Out at your lawn, one that none can compare

Just ask my wife!
