Boy of Ten
by David G. Bancroft

The boy of ten fears
what might be
if what he
just saw was true.

His mind races
visualizing the dead faces
of those he loves
with his among them.

Nor can he dismiss
these thoughts of dread
even when he was told
that it could not happen.

Wishing he had not switched channels,
he turns the channel again
and becomes lost
in the enjoyment of a movie
where a superhero saves the world.

The boy now wonders
how cool it would be
if he was the superhero,
wearing the neat red and blue costume.
