WHAT IS A POET, by Claude Peter Dhuet

Claude Peter Dhuet

What is a poet, out of curiosity -
For this is someone I can never be -
With gilded words flowing from my pen -
And a repertoire of words that has no end -
Revered by men with a PHD -
This does not describe a person -
As humble as me.

I have never dwelt in a magic kingdom-
Among the lofty stars -
Transcended earthly bounds -
That seem so very far.

Nor ran in silken pastures -
Where butterflies spin yarns of gold -
These are things that poets do -
Like those well known bards of old.

So I will keep on putting words together -
And fill my lines with hope -
And be content to just pretend -
Someone will mistake me for a poet.

Note: Although I have written numerous poems, I still don't know what gives one the right to be called a poet. I refuse to write poetry that requires interpretation by a second party or has double meaning or so profound that it requires someone with an IQ of 190 to understand. Poems should be writtn to be enjoyed by people of all level of understanding, not an enigma to be deciphered.
