THE FOURTH OF JULY
By - Claude Peter Dhuet
If someone would ask you to comment -
About this special day -
Would you hesitate and wonder-
Exactly what to say.
Or would you know its meaning -
And answer right away -
And say its very plain to me -
I do know just what to say.
It was on this day many years ago -
Our forefathers did declare -
That we were no longer bound -
To a kingdom over there.
Across the wide, wide ocean -
That took many days to reach -
We needed our independence -
Our very own laws to teach.
But independence wasn’t easy -
They had to fight and shed their blood -
So that you and I are free -
In this land we should dearly love.
So take time out and be thankful -
And say how grateful you are -
For all the many ones who died -
For the striped flag with all the stars.

Comment On This Poem
Note: Dedicated to all those who fought and those who died in ALL the wars we had to fight to keep our independence.
We have the right to burn our flag in reverence - after it is old and tattered and no longer usable - but never in defiance.
