The high priest Jonathan led the Hebrews
In battle to aid Alexander the Great.
Alexander sent Jonathan, his kinsman,
A gold button of honor from king and state.

It was the first medal of written history,
As far back as the third century B.C.
Since then, medals have been given to soldiers,
For bravery in battle by air, land, and sea.

There are medals for sports and Olympic games,
Or for outstanding work, like the Nobel Prize.
Medals are of gold, silver, bronze, and ribbon;
And are of all shapes and different size.

So when you see a medal, remember,
It is a symbol of the best among all.
Mainly a product of human sacrifice,
Far beyond any country's duty or call.
