THE LAST TRILLING OF THE BELL
by Claude Peter Dhuet

When the final trilling of the bell has rung-
And the last breath from my body done-
Will my soul in honesty declare to me-
That from all earthly bounds I now am free.

Or will it venture to declare-
That oft the time you lingered there-
Was time oft useless spent-
No concern to where it went.

For the gift of life that once you knew-
Was not given to pleasure only you-
But to share with your fellow man-
And help in whatever way you can.

So if in your soul you feel a need-
To make amends for your misdeed-
Of time on earth unwisely spent-
Take solace there is an eternity to repent.
